The Spanish Civil War by British historian Hugh Thomas was first published in 1961, and revised extensively in 1972. This beautiful edition was published by the Folio Society, London in 2014. Widely acclaimed as a masterpiece, this is a beautiful and highly sought after set of books with an Introduction by Michael Alpert. The cover designs on the red and yellow cloth are magnificent. Books are bound in buckram in a Smyth-sewn binding with red and yellow head and tail bands. The paper is standard Abbey Wove paper, printed and bound in Germany. There are 64 plates of illustrations printed on glossy photographic paper, with 35 maps integrated in the 2 volumes.
Hugh Thomas' narrative and monumental history of the Spanish Civil War is widely recognized as the best, most definitive and authoritative accounts of this traumatic period in European History.
"Since its first publication, Hugh Thomas's The Spanish Civil War has become established as the definitive one-volume history of a conflict that continues to provoke intense controversy today. What was it that roused left-wing sympathizers from all over the world to fight against Franco between 1936 and 1939? Why did the British and US governments refuse to intervene? And why did the Republican cause collapse so violently? Now revised and updated, Hugh Thomas's classic account presents the most objective and unbiased analysis of a passionate struggle where fascism and democracy, communism and Catholicism were at stake - and which was as much an international war as a Spanish one."
