The Red Pony is one of John Steinbeck’s most enduring early works. It's a coming-of-age story set in California’s Salinas Valley that explores childhood, responsibility, loss, and the relationship between people and the natural world. The interconnected stories that comprise the book were written between 1933 and 1937.
This elegant 1945 Viking Press edition is the first illustrated edition and is particularly sought after for its elegant design and artwork by Wesley Dennis. A remarkably well-preserved copy with minimal signs of age, this volume features attractive watercolour illustrations throughout, cloth-covered boards with an illustrated vignette on the front cover, gold gilt lettering on the spine, and distinctive forest ash-green page edges.
