An 1855 issue of La Revue des Deux-Mondes contained the first large number (eighteen poems) to appear in a single publication. The first edition of Les Fleurs du Mal (Flowers of Evil) under that title was brought out in 1857 by Auguste Poulet-Malassis of Alençon. The second edition (1861), from which six of the earlier poems were excluded by court order, contained thirty-five additions. Five more poems appeared in the third edition, published posthumously (1868). The translations selected for this volume are the work of thirty-three poets, and range in date of publication from 1882 to 1950. An edition was first published by The Limited Editions Club in 1940; a new edition, completed by the addition of five poems and illustrated by Pierre-Yves Trémois, appeared in 1971 (copyright © by The Limited Editions Club).
