Jude the Obscure first appeared serially in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in 1894-95 under two successive provisional titles: The Simpletons and Hearts Insurgent; this was an abridged and modified version of the original manuscript. In 1895 the complete novel, with the Author's Pref-ace, came out in the seventeen-volume Uniform Edition of the works of Thomas Hardy, published by Osgood, McIlvaine & Co. in London and by Harper & Bros. in New York. For the definitive Wessex Edition of the novels, issued in 1912, Hardy made some minor corrections in Jude the Obscure and added a Postscript to the original Preface. The first edition containing the Agnes Miller Parker engravings was issued by The Limited Editions Club (copy-right © 1969). This Collector's Edition was published by advance reservation exclusively for subscribers to the Easton Press collection of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. The frontispiece portrait was specially commissioned for this edition.
