"This fully annotated text of the Classics Club Library Edition of Epictetus is based upon the translation of Thomas Wentworth Higginson. For style and readability it is generally recognized as the best English translation ever made. Higginson, however, lived in the overly genteel Victorian era of the last century, and for this reason frequently balked at calling Epictetus' spade a spade. Consequently, in order that you may enjoy more of the earthy flavor and directness of Epictetus' own style, the Higginson translation has been considerably re-vised-substituting more accurate wordings for the original translator's Victorian evasions. As you spend delightful hours with Epictetus, you will find that his incomparable nuggets of wisdom glow with a steady lustre in your memory long after the book is closed."
