Beautiful, well made and designed book, written by one of the greats – Stendhal. Fine and leather Bound. Book accented in 22kt gold. Condition: Like New. The second page has an ex libris (label) from the publisher (Easton Press) with owner's signature on the label. 1.536kg, 18x26.5x4cm. This book is printed on archival quality paper especially milled for this collector’s edition with gilded edges. The end sheets are of moire fabric with a silk ribbon page marker. Smyth sewing and concealed muslin joints to ensure the highest quality binding. This book is in full leather with hubbed spines. 1980 First Easton Press Edition. Le Rouge et le Noir was originally issued in 1830 by Levavasseur, Paris, in two octavo volumes; also in 1830 it was reprinted in six 16mo volumes. The novel was included in the seventeen-volume edition of Stendhal's works published 1853-55 by Michel Lévy, Paris, and republished in 1912-23 by Honoré et Edouard Champion in thirty-five volumes. Important separate editions of the novel are those issued in 1886 by Alphonse Lemerre and in 1925 by Editions Bos-sard. English translations have been made by Horace Samuel, 1916; C. K. Scott-Moncrieff, 1926 (copy-right 1926 by Boni & Liveright, renewed 1954 by George Scott-Moncrieff); Charles Tergie, 1960; and others. The edition of The Red and the Black comprising the Scott-Moncrieff translation with the introduction by Hamilton Basso and the illustrations by Rafaello Busoni was issued by The George Macy Companies, Inc., New York (copyright 1947, ©1975). This Collector's Edition was published by advance reservation exclusively for subscribers to the Easton Press collection of The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written. The frontispiece portrait was specially commissioned and, like the other special contents, is copyright ©1980 by The Easton Press.
