Cloth bound. The entire collection is in very good condition given its date. Paper quality in the pages are excellent with no markings. There are some nicks and scuffs on 4 of the book spines, and wear is visible on some covers, but the integrity of all the books in the set are solid. In half of the books (10 volumes) the first 2 pages have become a little loose at the point where they attach to the spine but remain well attached to the inside cover and function well (see example on image 16). Only 1 book has a few loose leafs (in the content section of Vol XVIII) but this and other wear can easily be restored and repaired professionally by a future owner.
This aged, venerable collection is very readable and functional with over 500 wonderful full page illustrations. These set deserves a good home and will look fabulous on a bookshelf.
