A rare and beautiful 'complete' 20 volume first edition set published in (1898/1899) of the world's great literature from Abbot and Abelard to Zola. Includes thorough indexes in the last volume. This is a well sought out collection and the only complete known set (as of this posting date) that is available for sale. Furthermore, the entire collection is in very good condition given its date. This aged, venerable collection is very readable and functional with over 500 wonderful full page illustrations. There are some nicks and scuffs on 4 of the book spines, and wear is visible on some covers, but the integrity of all the books in the set are solid. In half of the books (10 volumes) the first 2 pages have become a little loose at the point where they attach to the spine but remain well attached to the inside cover and function well (see example on image 16). Only 1 book has a few loose leafs (in the content section of Vol XVIII) but this and other wear can easily be restored and repaired professionally by a future owner. These books deserve a good home and will look fabulous on a bookshelf. Paper quality in the pages are excellent with no markings. These books are not only a joy to read and browse through; they will hold their value easily and appreciate in value over time. Cloth bound. Published by the American Literary Society, New York 1898.
